Re-DASH

Technology is evolving every day and leading to a more convenient lifestyle. However, electronic devices that are no longer used after being replaced by new technology are exported to Asian countries as electronic waste. A lot of these electronic wastes went to landfills without being recycled. This work aims to bring new life by remaking electronic devices that have lost their place along the way.

The Amazono dash button is now completely obsolete and there are quite a few left on my hands. So we decided to use this device as an IoT button for the time tracking service Toggl. I usually use it only for managing work hours, but I decided to record the entire life cycle because visualizing lifestyle is indispensable for a healthy life. By arranging dedicated buttons in various places in the room, the timer can be operated without using a smartphone.

Need to detect that the button has been pressed. I decided to use node-dash-button as a library for that. In addition, since it is necessary to be able to always detect, the server was built using RaspberryPi. When a button is pressed, the corresponding Toogl API is hit. Also implemented notify on Slack that a button was pressed using Webhook.

By arranging buttons in various places, it was not necessary to use a smartphone, so it was easy to become a habit. Also, as an unintended result, it was found that switching the head can be performed smoothly by accessing the physical device every time.
